BOWEN ISLAND TRANSPORTATION SOCIETY
Working Towards a Brighter Future
MORNINGS & AFTERNOONS
Morning: We pick up passengers from the North side of the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal. We meet the 6:20, 7:30, & 8:35 sailings and take people downtown to points along Georgia Street (stops are at Burrard, Granville, Richards & Cambie).
Afternoon: We pick up passengers from the north (west bound) side of Georgia Street at Richards, Granville, and Burrard. In all three cases we are at the NE corner. Departures at 3:45, 4:55, at 6:05 (traffic willing) to connect with water taxis and the BC Ferries afternoon runs to Bowen. The water taxi runs are timed to meet the bus upon arrival in Horseshoe Bay, so the timing isn't exact, but approximately 4:20, 5:40, and 6:50.
BTS riders will have priority for connecting watertaxi.
In 2015 Peter King started to run his service charter, which was a temporary service during the major retrofit of the Queen of Capilano. It was instantly a life changer for Islander Commuters.
Not long after, in a day when the ferry was having issues, a group of passengers called for the water taxi service. They liked it so much that the next day they called again. A week after that a seamless service from DT Vancouver to Snug Cove was established.
In 2018 Peter had some unforeseen bus issues and breakdowns. A group of users of the service got together and raised money to help Peter and its business. This group of commuters continued to work with Peter to come up with a plan to ensure the invaluable service continues in a sustainable and reliable way while at the same time helping Peter transition into his desired retirement.
To maintain and enhance the transportation offers and services for Bowen Islanders with the end goal of improving the quality of life for the whole Island Community.
LIVING ON THE ROCK - WHY BTS EXISTS?
The nature of Island living
The transportation needs of Bowen Islanders are unique as they are dependent on multimodal transportation (land and sea vehicles). As a result the traditional options to commute between the island and the mainland are inefficient, expensive and stressful.
The daily commute challenge
Living on the island has its perks, however traditional commuting is not one of them.
From downtown Vancouver driving or using the public system and connecting to the Queen of Capilano result in commutes of 60 minutes in a great day and 75 minutes on average (both numbers based on return home trips after a long day and with with no consideration of overload or missing the cutoff by 1 minute).
A significant amount of time is spent waiting for the scheduled vehicle to arrive or leave.
OUR VALUE PROPOSITION
Deliver tailored transportation services to meet the specific needs of Bowen Islanders that result in an increase in well being of the community.
Near Term Specifics
BTS will continue to oversee and integrate the joint operation of the commuter bus with the water taxi to deliver the fastest, most stress free commute between Downtown Vancouver and Snug Cove at comparable market rates (whale watching is not a guaranteed).
Additionally, the joint operation is probably the most energy efficient way to commute to and from Bowen Island.
BTS will attempt to pilot a members charter bus program - tailored for pick up- in the North Shore during the evenings on weekdays (details and specific to come). The pilot focus is to address the commuting needs of families participating in after school programs in North and West Vancouver, which historically has been a detriment to island living (details to come).
